Known Issues - Windows:

Sounds are garbled or scratchy:
This problem can occur on Windows during playback of QuickTime movies (the princess or any movie). To resolve this problem, open the Control Panel then double click on the QuickTime settings control panel (the Blue Q). Select Sound Out from the pop up menu, then choose "Wave Out" as the playback device.
Voices don't play but music can be heard:
This problem can occur on certain Windows configurations. To resolve this problem, you can deactivate Direct Sound by starting the game and then once the screen turns black, hold down the SHIFT key until the words "A Karma Labs Production" appear on the screen. Voices should now play correctly.
Objects are lost or disappear upon acquiring them:
This phenomenon can occur after loading a saved game via the control panel. If you find that your object inventory is behaving strangely you should reload the last saved game that via the entry screen rather than the control panel. To do this, open the tool bar, click the quit button and restart a new game from the quit screen. Click on the intro animations to bypass them, then Load your saved game from the control panel.
"QuickTime not found" or "This program requires QuickTime 3 or later" error message:
In certain cases QuickTime will not automatically be installed, if you get the above error message you will need to install QuickTime from the "Adventure at the Chateau d'Or" CD-ROM. This can be done as follows:
  1. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive and hold down the SHIFT key until the icon appears on the desktop. This will disable AUTORUN. If AUTORUN is not disabled and the game starts, just quit the game and go to the next step.
  2. Right click on the Chateau CD ROM icon and choose "Explore". If you don't see the CD ROM icon, or you don't see an explore menu, then double-click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop and right-click on the icon for the CD-ROM drive called "Chateau", then choose "Explore"
  3. Double-click on the folder called "Install QuickTime 4" to open the folder, then double-click on the QuickTimeInstaller icon to launch the QuickTime4 installer.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions and restart your computer.
Msvcrt.dll error message:
This message occurs most frequently on systems that are running Windows ME and have an Nvidia graphics board and usually an HP printer. The problem is a driver conflict between the Microsoft driver, msvcrt.dll, and some other 3rd party drivers.

To avoid this error message you have several options:

  1. Select any other printer as your default printer by clicking on the Start Menu, then selecting settings, and Printers. You can add a new printer "generic printer" and use that as your default. Restart your computer and Adventure at the Chateau d'Or should run normally now.
  2. Go to the Control Panel (Start Menu: Settings: Control Panel: System), click on "Device Manager", expand the "Ports" group, select Printer Port, click the "Properties" button and select "disable in this hardware profile". Restart your computer and Adventure at the Chateau d'Or should run normally now.
  3. If none of the above work, select a different default printer, then turn off your printer after you start your computer.
